On Gary Husband...

Hi,

I've seen Gary Husband three times live, two times with Holdsworth and with Level 42 a couple of months ago in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Wow. Amazing drummer in every situation. It took me a while to understand his playing and to appreciate what he is doing. But when I got older it finally made sense. I've had that with a couple of drummers.
His groove with a soft bassdrum on every count of the beat while playing the bassdrum pattern on top of that with one foot with snare on 2 and 4 is killing. It pushes Level 42 forward in a very positive musical way. Check out the live video from Level 42 with Gary Husband and as said before his video. One of my favourites next to Vinnie, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Peter Erskine and Jack De Johnette. All storytellers on such a high level. [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img]

Gary is more than a so-called 'fusion player'. His staight ahead drumming has to be seen/heard to be believed. I have seen him loads here in London and he ranks among the best. His playing with (guitarist) Jim Mullen and (saxophonist) Alan Skidmore is incredible, he swings so hard.
Gary is also an incredible pianist and has recently toured with Billy Cobham playing keys, truly a well rounded musician.

Wait........I'm a bit embarrassed to ask this, but is Husband the drummer on the live video Level 42 had out in the 80's? (the video had Mark King doing a wonderful slap solo, and "Something About You" was one of the tunes on it)

P.S. - I was a bass player at the time, so forgive me that I didn't know if that was him.

Well, you have to hurry if you want to see Gary with Level 42 because he says on his site that it is probably his last involvement in the band. And yes it kicks ...

Don't shoot me, but I actually like Phil Gould's playing better than Gary with Level 42. Gary pushes, while Phil lays back. Just different.

Hi Danny, there is indeed the difference of both players, I won't shoot you. I have also the "old" live CD and video of Level 42 and both are great. Phil Gould his hi-hat is so smooth and his groove laid back. [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img] Just different but better? A matter of taste I guess. But when I saw Gary I was happy it rocked [img]biggrin.gif[/img] That's what I needed at that moment. My rockcontents in my blood was very low [img]cool.gif[/img]

I looked at his site. He seems pretty upbeat, and He seems to have gotten a sweet endorsement with DW. I'm glad to see this, as I remember a few email replies that he sent to a fan suggesting his frustration with drumming, and that he viewed himself as a "marginal" player, and was thinking of putting up the sticks.
(Marginal?!?!? How ludicrous!)

Why is it that some of the greatest players don't realize the influence they have on others on their instrument?

I'd love to see a Level 42 re-union tour come around. Can you imagine Gary tearing it up on their "Foudation and Empire"? Man, Mark King/Gary Husband.... I'm hearing the groove right now...........

The early UZEB stuff included a keyboard player as well. UZEB was a band you HAD TO see perform Live to really get hooked. They had that "magical chemistry" happening live. Chemistry sometimes hard to make happen in studio (not that the studio stuff isn't good). Percussionist Don Alias toured with them for while in the 80's. So here are the studio albums I suggest you get:

- Fast Emotions (1982); very nice and well written, has Mike Brecker playing on a few tracks.
- Noisy Nights (1988); 1st album as a Trio
- UZEB Club (1989)

I strongly recommend the solo CD by Alain Caron titled "PLAY". There is a nice 6/8 tune (track#2), that I really love. Especially the way he interact in an outstanding Sax solo by Phil Dwyer and also Otmaro Ruiz's solo on keys... TASTY, therefore, inspiring to me!!! He's also real solid on the last track titled "trouble".

His straight ahead is well displayed in a CD by pianist Lorraine Desmarais, it's titled "Vision".

Also try to get the last two by Sax player Jean Pierre Zannella...
